About SWC

Promoting Mental Health, Fostering Growth

The Student Wellness Centre (SWC) at IIT Bombay is a safe, confidential, and compassionate space dedicated to supporting the mental, emotional, and psychological well-being of our student community.

Established in 1987, SWC is one of the oldest student counseling centres in Indian higher education. With a legacy spanning over three decades, we have evolved into a comprehensive resource hub offering counseling services, psychological assessments, wellness workshops, and mental health awareness programs tailored to the unique challenges faced by students.

At SWC, we understand that academic pressure, personal struggles, and life transitions can feel overwhelming. Our team of trained mental health professionals is here to listen without judgment, guide with empathy, and help you develop the skills to navigate difficult times.

From managing academic stress and relationship challenges to building resilience and self-confidence, we are committed to helping students grow—not just academically, but holistically.

Our long-standing history is rooted in the belief that mental well-being is foundational to academic success and personal fulfillment. Thousands of students have walked through our doors and discovered new perspectives, healthier coping strategies, and renewed confidence in themselves.

If you ever feel stuck, anxious, low, or simply need someone to talk to—you are not alone. Reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness. Whether it’s your first time or you’ve been before, SWC is always here for you.

We invite you to explore our services, attend our programs, and connect with us. Let SWC be a part of your journey—towards wellness, growth, and becoming the best version of yourself.

1987- The Beginning of Care: Student Wellness Centre Since 1987

The Student Wellness Centre began its journey in 1987 with a visionary goal—to provide emotional and mental health support to students. What started with just one dedicated counsellor, Ms. Amita Tagare, serving around 150 students, has grown into a dynamic support hub catering to a vibrant community of over 12,000 students today.

As the need for mental health support grew, so did we. Over the years, the Centre expanded into two additional office spaces to better serve the increasing number of students seeking guidance for emotional concerns, personal issues, and academic stress.

Over the years, we have integrated a holistic approach to student wellness, offering counselling, mental health resources, workshops, peer support, and wellness initiatives that promote resilience and personal growth.

Recognising the importance of creating a safe, welcoming space for students to express themselves, the Centre eventually moved to its current location on the third floor- an expanded and dedicated wellness centre designed to meet the evolving needs of the student community.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to fostering well-being and building a resilient and healthier IITB community.
